A Legacy of Generosity

From propane pioneers to philanthropic pillars:  Patty and Stan Teaderman’s impact on Napa Valley

When asked about their legacy of generosity toward Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center, Patty and Stan Teaderman will repeat one phrase several times: “We are privileged for what little bit we’ve been able to do.”

Quite a humble statement from a family who pledged $1 million in support of the Queen, the hospital where two of their three children were born. The Teadermans have epitomized a journey of hard work, dedication and generosity that has left an indelible mark on the Napa Valley landscape.

Although both Stan and Patty moved to Napa as children in 1947, their paths didn’t cross until high school, where their shared journey began. After marrying straight out of high school, Stan joined his father’s small propane business, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become Allied Propane. With an unwavering commitment to entrepreneurship, Stan built the business from scratch, catering to the burgeoning industrial propane market of the 1960s.

“When we started the business, we didn’t have one customer,” Stan says. “It was a little naive, right? Well, it’s good to be young and naive.”

Meanwhile, Patty contributed her expertise in the office, supporting the business’s growth and development. Their entrepreneurial spirit extended beyond propane, leading them to invest in a vineyard in 1978 that became Teaderman Vineyards. Guided by the wisdom of industry legends like Justin Meyer, they navigated the intricacies of winemaking, cementing their place in Napa’s storied wine community.

Their philanthropic endeavors are as remarkable as their business acumen. A spontaneous gift of $1 million during 2015’s Generous Heart event in support of cardiology — which even Patty was surprised by — is a testament to their commitment to giving back to the community that has nurtured them. Their involvement underscores their dedication to health care access for all, reflecting a deep-rooted belief in serving the community’s most vulnerable.

Throughout their journey, Patty and Stan have remained humble, recognizing the importance of community and collective impact. Stan’s service on the foundation board and their continued support for charitable initiatives highlight their enduring commitment to making a difference.

Their story serves as an inspiration, reminding others of the transformative power of collective generosity, compassion and community engagement. Patty and Stan Teaderman’s legacy will endure not only through their business ventures but also through their profound impact on the lives of those they have touched in the Napa Valley and beyond. In Stan’s words, “We’ve been very privileged to be able to help others and to have the ability to maybe make their life better. And the Queen cares for anybody that comes into the hospital. That’s what charity is.”
