In the heart of Napa Valley, a story of love and community spirit unfolds. Kathi and Don Turner, celebrating 52 years of marriage, have woven their lives into the fabric of Napa, leaving an indelible mark on the community they call home.
The Turners’ story began in Florida and eventually led them to California, where they built a successful restaurant company in Santa Barbara and started their family. Don’s entrepreneurial drive later evolved into a consulting career, helping small businesses thrive.
Settling in Napa more than 40 years ago, the Turners quickly became integral members of the community. Kathi’s involvement with the Reach for the Stars fashion show, benefiting cancer patients at Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center, was just the beginning of their deep connection to the hospital.
Don’s own health challenges, including battles with lung cancer, brought the couple face-to-face with the exceptional care provided at Queen of the Valley. “I’ve found the Queen to be an incredibly compassionate, giving and loving environment,” Don says. His experience, coupled with Kathi’s own treatment for cancer at the Queen, solidified their appreciation for the hospital’s vital role in the community.
Recognizing the challenges facing health care today, the Turners made the decision to include Queen of the Valley in their estate plan. Their gift, exceeding $1 million, will name the hospital’s infusion center, a place close to their hearts due to the treatment they both have received there.
“We feel that it’s up to the community at this time to step up, shore up the Queen, to make sure that it’s going to be there for our generation and future generations,” Don says.
For the Turners, this gift is a testament to the care they’ve received, the relationships they’ve built and their vision for the future of health care in Napa. Kathi’s ongoing volunteer work in the emergency department and Don’s service on the Foundation board demonstrate their hands-on commitment to the hospital’s mission.
As they reflect on their decision, the Turners express gratitude for the ability to support both their family and their community. “If our small part can help the Queen stay and grow, then I think it’s amazing,” Kathi says.
The Turners’ legacy gift ensures that the compassionate care they’ve experienced will continue to touch lives for generations to come, embodying the true spirit of community support.
